JAIL411 / FAMILY FIELD GUIDE

San Francisco county jails: a practical family guide.

Sources reviewed

Adult San Francisco Sheriff custody: CJ2 and current CJ3, with CJ1 intake/release and CJ3 Annex distinctions. Hospital, former CJ4, juvenile, state and federal custody are separate.

  1. Find current custody

Search the Sheriff locator or call 415-553-1430.

  2. Reserve and get approval

Book the day before, include every visitor, arrive 30 minutes early.

  3. Use the right service

Free calls, trust deposits and packages have different rules.

  4. Plan the return

Confirm physical release and the actual transport endpoint.

PART 01

Find the right facility

Custody, identity and current destinations.

Find the person and save the SF number

Start with the Sheriff’s live custody search. Match the booked name and identifiers; save the SF number (SFNO), booking number, housing, charges, next court date and Total Bond if shown. Jail411 does not host a live roster. Public jail information: 415-553-1430.

  1. Use the name as booked, including spelling variants or aliases you know. A recently arrested person may still be with the arresting agency or in booking; ask that agency where it delivered the person.
  2. If the search does not load, enable JavaScript and reload the official page. The current search is an embedded application. A blank screen is not a custody result.
  3. If no matching record appears, call with full name and date of birth. Ask about intake, another jail, hospital, release or transfer. Although the visiting page says a person not listed is not in its jail, do not treat a failed search or ambiguous match as proof of release.
  4. Confirm the current building and pod before reserving, mailing or paying. Total Bond is not a release promise: identity checks, other cases and holds still matter.

Juvenile detention, CDCR state prison, federal detention and immigration custody require their own systems. San Bruno’s location does not make County Jail #3 a San Mateo County jail.

Former CJ4 / hospital wardsCJ4 functionally closed September 4, 2020; hospital Ward 7D/7L is a separate clinical destinationDo not use CJ2/CJ3 ordinary visiting rules or a historical 850 Bryant jail listing for either.

CJ1 is the intake/release operation; CJ2 shares its address but provides housing. The February 2026 budget uses a loose intake label for CJ2; the operating intake page and 2025 annual report make the distinction explicit. The current CJ3 is the facility formerly called CJ5, not the old demolished jail that also used the number 3. This guide’s operational schedules attach to CJ2 and CJ3; Annex-specific arrangements remain unverified.

The Sheriff describes RESET at 444 6th Street as a crisis-stabilization alternative to jail for eligible adults brought by law enforcement, not a walk-in service or ordinary jail booking. Earlier material planned a spring 2026 opening; the current page mixes present-tense service descriptions with “when open.” We did not verify an actual opening date or current admissions. If no jail record appears, ask the arresting agency for the person’s actual destination, including any hospital or stabilization service; do not travel to RESET or use jail deposits based on this description.

Policy references in this guide come from the December 4, 2025 custody manual linked on the current Policies and Rules page; the reviewed policy-page footers show that date. The September 28, 2026 review date is our source check, not a claim that every policy was newly issued in 2026. Current operating pages take precedence where their details differ; conflicts are stated.

The current CJ2 Annex page identifies former CJ4 at 850 Bryant Street, 7th Floor as kitchen, laundry and administrative space with no incarcerated housing. It gives closure as September 5, 2020; the final report records functional closure September 4, 2020. This is distinct from the active CJ3 Annex in San Bruno.

Plan a visit

Schedule, approval, children and video.

2026 visit calendar, reservations and check-in

FacilityPublished days / timeHousing
CJ2Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 7:30 AM–6:30 PMA, B, C, D, E, F and Civil Commitments
CJ3Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PMAll pods

Reserve between 9:00 AM and midnight the day before; arrive at least 30 minutes early. Use San Francisco’s ViaPath/GTL reservation portal. Register with current government photo ID, email, name, birth date, home address as shown on ID and phone. Use the emailed temporary password and visitor ID; enter every additional visitor when reserving. Save confirmation and check the assigned location and slot before travel. Late arrival is treated as cancellation; changing clothes does not extend the appointment.

The current Sheriff page labels this the 2026 schedule. The portal still displays an April 20–June 30, 2026 weekday suspension and Saturday-only CJ2 / Sunday-only CJ3 chart. That notice’s stated period has ended. It does not establish a continuing weekday ban or override a confirmed appointment. Weekdays are not listed on the current Sheriff chart; ask 415-553-1430 about any offered weekday or conflicting weekend slot. Isolation/quarantine prevents in-person visits until medical clearance.

One visit with the same person per day. Current public sources do not establish a fixed session length or exact cancellation deadline; use the reservation’s actual duration and ask support how to cancel. The policy allows three total visitors including children, while the portal says no more than two adult visitors. Confirm the entire group; do not arrive with an unregistered third adult. Account help: visitorsupport@gtl.net.

The December 2025 policy says arrive 20 minutes early; the current visiting page and CJ3 directions require 30 minutes. Follow the current 30-minute instruction. Neither number is a verified visit-session length.

Identification, clothing and visitor approval

Bring current government-issued photo ID. Policy §1010.2.1 also recognizes state, military and tribal identification, and an ID up to 90 days past expiration if renewed with proof. The current visitor page asks for current ID; obtain approval before relying on that renewal exception. A felony conviction with state-prison confinement requires advance Watch Commander approval under the public page. Policy language also contains a general authorization for public-area visits and protection against denying a parent/child facilitator solely for a past prison conviction; resolve your own eligibility before arriving.

Keep only keys, ID and money for the visiting lockers; both jails warn locker space is limited. No phones, cameras, food, drinks or personal items in the visiting area; no alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons or medication brought in without an approved accommodation. Do not pass items to the person or receive items without Watch Commander approval. A restraining or court order may prohibit the visit. Searches, disruptive conduct or uncontrolled children can end a visit.

Clothes and health-entry rules still displayed

Wear shoes and non-revealing clothing. Prohibited: exposed underwear; transparent or excessively tight clothes; spaghetti straps, strapless/halter, bare-midriff or sleeveless tops; skirts/shorts above fingertips with arms at sides; gang clothing/accessories; obscene images/words; orange, red, all-blue or all-green outfits resembling jail clothing. Head coverings are barred except religious headwear. Ask a supervisor about religious or disability accommodations.

The current page still displays COVID-era requirements: symptom-free, no positive test/diagnosis in the past 10 days, no specified close contact in the past 14 days, vaccination/booster evidence or official negative test within 48 hours (home-test photo insufficient), and K/N95 masks provided if needed. These are published entry instructions, not independent medical advice; ask the visiting desk which are being enforced for your date.

Children, unaccompanied teenagers and special visits

All visitors under 18 need advance approval. Limited parent-child contact visits are arranged internally. The incarcerated parent applies, completes parenting classes and follows conduct rules; disqualifying orders, convictions or pending felony charges involving a minor can prevent approval. The accompanying caregiver must remain with the child.

  1. For an unaccompanied visitor age 16 or 17, complete the Sheriff’s application. Collect original proof of age (ID, birth certificate, school transcript or court order) and proof of relationship.
  2. Call the family counselor at 415-575-4459; leave name and callback number. Bring the documents and the parent/guardian responsible outside jail to the interview. Sign the emailed application before the counselor.
  3. The counselor forwards the recommendation; the Sheriff obtains the incarcerated parent/guardian’s signature. Published review time is five days to two weeks. If denied, appeal within 30 days of notification.
  4. Approval lasts only for that current incarceration. It does not authorize bringing another unaccompanied minor. The general visit page includes siblings; the detailed application page describes a parent or guardian. Confirm sibling eligibility with the counselor.

Paperwork help: Project What!, 510-486-2340, cw.project.what@gmail.com. Current sources do not specify infant bottle/diaper quantities or stroller rules; ask the visiting supervisor before packing. Older lobby signage allowed a blanket and bottle or pacifier, but was not verified as the 2026 rule. Policy §1010.7 allows the Facility Commander to consider special visits, including distance traveled, relationship, purpose and circumstances; approval is discretionary. Ask a supervisor for disability accommodations. A written appeal of future visit denial goes to the Facility Commander, who should respond within five business days.

Limited social video: arrange the session first

The actual current Sheriff video page says limited video visits are scheduled internally on a rotating basis with the incarcerated person. Do not assume an in-person ViaPath account creates a bookable remote session. Ask the facility how the person requests a rotation slot and how the approved visitor receives the link/code, length and cancellation instructions. Legal/professional video uses a separate Sheriff request process.

Connect five minutes early, check Wi-Fi, camera and microphone, and use the supplied session link. Visitors must be 18 or older unless a minor is registered under an adult’s confirmed visit; the adult must stay present. Do not share codes/passwords, add unapproved participants, take photographs, use alcohol/drugs, show gang signs or sexual activity, or violate a court order. Social video is monitored and recorded.

For a failed or cancelled session, retain confirmation, time, device/browser and error details, then contact visitorsupport@gtl.net and the facility at 415-553-1430 to distinguish an account problem from housing/rotation cancellation. No local public source verified a remote-video price, refund rule, replacement-session entitlement or current mandatory app. Ask before paying a provider; free phone calls do not by themselves establish video terms.

Free calls, blocked numbers and confidential calls

All county-jail phone calls are free under the current Sheriff page and policy §1009. The person calls out; incoming calls are not permitted without jail-management approval, and only verified emergency messages are delivered under policy. Calls may be limited during classes/programs, high demand or security restrictions. A missed call does not show that someone has been released or denied care.

If calls fail, note the date, destination number and exact recorded message. Check handset spam/call blocking and ask the jail whether the number is blocked, the person has telephone access, or a technical ticket is needed. Do not purchase a telephone product to resolve a problem without confirming the facility’s instruction. The current local phone page does not name a family billing account or carrier support number. Historical prepaid funds should be pursued with the vendor shown on the original receipt; the jail’s free-call rule does not itself refund an old account or transfer it to another jail.

Ordinary calls may be monitored and recorded. Policy protects calls to verified counsel/legal-team members, licensed physicians and clergy through an approved confidential-number process; ask the professional and facility to complete verification before discussing protected matters. TDD or an equally effective device is to be available for deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired people. Ask staff for language/disability assistance and document unresolved access problems in a grievance.

Booking policy §502.9 also gives a custodial parent two additional calls to arrange care for a minor child. Tell booking staff about that responsibility and ask to make those calls.

Use USPS only and a full return address. Mail must be no larger than 8½ × 14 inches. The current page routes both personal and legal mail to the housing jail; no offsite scanning address is published. Confirm an Annex-specific label before sending there. General mail is opened and inspected and may be read. Mail is forwarded unopened when the person moves within custody; after release it is returned to sender or USPS if no return address.

Legal/confidential correspondence includes attorneys, legal representatives, courts, public officials and Prisoner Legal Services (PLS). Under policy §1008, incoming confidential mail is inspected for physical contraband in the recipient’s presence and its content is not read. Outgoing confidential mail may be inspected in the person’s presence before sealing. The recipient signs a legal-mail receipt; refusal to sign is recorded and does not itself prevent delivery. PLS hand-delivery has a specific exception. Clearly identify the professional sender and legal nature; a family letter does not become privileged merely by labeling it legal.

Inspection, timing and rejected originals

Policy targets processing letters within 24 hours and packages within 48 hours, excluding possible Sunday, holiday or emergency interruption; these are not guaranteed delivery times. Metal/plastic bindings in legal mail are removed in the person’s presence; if removal destroys the document, it is returned with a notice. Rejection records should identify the item, reason, disposition and deputy, with notice to recipient and sender unless investigation/security prevents notice. Prohibited items may be returned, held with property or investigated. Retain the envelope and notice; ask the Watch Commander/PLS how to challenge the specific rejection and use the grievance process. The sources do not establish a separate sender appeal deadline.

Photos, books and approved iCare deliveries

Send no more than 20 photos in a mailing; no Polaroids, sexual images, gang or unlawful-activity images. Do not mail stamps, stationery, cash, personal checks, clothing, hair, posters, jewelry, glitter, lottery tickets, stickers, food, magnets or ID cards. Objects of metal, wood, plastic, cloth or cardboard and items that cannot be searched without destruction may be rejected.

Current public instructions require books, newspapers and magazines directly from the publisher by USPS; no Amazon deliveries. Maximum three publications per mailing and ten held at once. Policy §1008.7 mentions bookstores/book clubs, but §1008.9 and the current public page require the publisher. Use the narrower current instruction unless the jail expressly approves a particular seller. No current hardback exception was verified.

Use iCare’s San Francisco store for approved gifts. Create an account, identify the person by name or eight-digit wristband number and check eligibility before paying by card. The Sheriff publishes a combined spend/receive limit of $100 in commissary items per week. iCare’s local schedule lists Wednesday/Thursday delivery with a Monday 9 PM order cutoff, subject to up to 30 days for delivery. Its page does not specify the cutoff’s time zone; confirm it in checkout.

Order help: 877-615-3296 or iCareCustomerService@aramark.com. Keep the order number and check account history. The provider’s FAQ has inconsistent descriptions of whether undeliverable packaged orders are stored or cancelled after three attempts; ask about the actual order. Fresh meals get one delivery attempt and no refund if unavailable; do not assume every product exists for this jail. Handling/processing fees are generally non-refundable. The Sheriff page’s February 24–March 1, 2025 transition notice is historical, not a present purchasing shutdown.

Mail only U.S.-bank cashier’s/certified checks or money orders totaling no more than $100 under the public instructions. No personal checks or cash by mail. Policy has special exceptions for certain government benefits/settlement checks; ask the Money Deputy before sending one. Deposits may first cover a negative account balance. Do not confuse the $100 weekly purchase limit with a verified overall trust-balance maximum.

TouchPay support: 866-204-1603. It does not hold the jail’s balance ledger and cannot reverse a successful payment; contact the facility about wrong-recipient funds. Save transaction ID and confirm credit before repeating a payment. The provider’s general fee or transfer language does not override the Sheriff’s free local cash methods or guarantee transfer to an unrelated jail.

Policy §1006 defines indigence as $5.00 or less in trust. Eligible people cannot be denied the indigent package: weekly minimum two stamped envelopes/two sheets plus hygiene essentials. §1008 adds a pencil and need-based legal correspondence supplies without a numeric attorney/court limit. The person can review account activity and report discrepancies to the Watch Commander and commissary provider, escalating to the Facility Commander.

Under §1002, the person may authorize a money release to someone outside once per calendar month using a deputy-signed Property Release Form. The recipient takes it and driver’s license/state ID to the Intake/Release money window; approved funds are issued by check. Bail-agent exceptions exist. Remaining funds are returned at release; unclaimed account funds must be claimed within one year through the Intake/Release property window with ID, or the policy’s written request route if held at another government institution.

There is a tender conflict: policy §1002.4.3 lists only cash or money orders for visitor deposits, while the current money-window page also lists cashier’s/certified checks. Before bringing a check to the window, confirm acceptance with the Money Deputy through 415-553-1430. The kiosk is cash-only.

Visitor entrances and parking limits

CJ2 and Intake/Release share the lobby at 425 7th Street. Neither has its own public parking lot. City Hall is not the visitor entrance; 850 Bryant is the courthouse/cash-bail destination, not the CJ2 lobby. SFMTA publishes 19 Polk service roughly 5 AM–10 PM daily, every 15 minutes weekdays and 20 minutes weekends during listed daytime/evening periods. These are route spans/frequencies, not a live arrival or a guarantee for a particular stop. Check the operator’s service alerts and last trip in your direction. Late release may occur after regular buses end.

  1. Since February 1, 2026, the Sheriff’s free Flywheel service replaces the CJ3 shuttle. At 598 Geneva Avenue, San Francisco, look for the white zone at Geneva and Delano. Do not use an old shuttle timetable.
  2. Request a ride by phone 855-359-2420, Flywheel app/website, specifying the Sheriff visitor service to County Jail #3. At arrival, the deputy completes a voucher and gives the original to the driver.
  3. After the visit, request the return ride. The driver contacts the front-gate deputy for the voucher before departure. Free return service is only to 598 Geneva Avenue, not a hotel or arbitrary home address.

Check BART’s Balboa Park elevator alerts and arrange the street segment to the pickup. Ask Flywheel about accessible vehicles, child seats, wait time and operating availability before the visit; the Sheriff does not publish a guaranteed dispatch interval or final return hour. Do not plan to walk from a San Bruno station up to the secure complex as a substitute for confirmed access. Flywheel support: support@flywheel.com.

PART 05

Care, safety and daily life

Clinical communication, grievances and programs.

Medical, mental health, medication and privacy

For an urgent medical condition or mental health crisis involving someone in jail, the current Sheriff homepage directs families to 415-558-4443, Monday–Friday 8 AM–5 PM; at all other times, weekends and holidays, 415-553-1444. State the name/SF number, housing if known, immediate concern, observed symptoms or threats and callback number. Ask that the Watch Commander and Jail Health Services (JHS) receive the information. Do not leave urgent concerns only in ordinary email or wait for a routine grievance.

JHS is part of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Give staff medication names/doses, pharmacy/prescriber contacts, allergies, recent treatment and withdrawal or suicide-risk information; ask for a secure clinical intake channel before sending records. The public sources do not establish a family prescription-dropoff desk or a universal permission to bring medicine. Treatment and medication decisions belong to clinical staff. A medical request form can be submitted to a housing deputy or JHS, with interpreter/disability assistance. Policy §703 calls for daily triage, and §702 sets timely access within seven days; emergencies require immediate attention rather than that routine interval.

Health records are separate from custody records. Policy §724 requires the patient’s completed written authorization before consent-based disclosure to a named person. Staff can receive family observations without promising to discuss the patient’s private treatment. Ask JHS how the person can sign the correct authorization, which records/people it covers and where it must be returned. Family relationship alone does not supply permission.

Glasses, assistive devices, pregnancy and lactation

§715 permits family/friends to bring glasses or disposable contact lenses for Watch Commander inspection; accepted items should reach the person before the shift ends. Confirm the receiving location first. Glasses already in stored property can be requested through a Property Request; people with less than $11.00 in commissary may receive reading glasses. Saline is requested through JHS. Prescribed adaptive devices have clinical/security review; if removed, policy requires clinical examination within 24 hours and alternative accommodations. The person may seek return through the specified court form with PLS help.

Pregnant people should tell JHS about care needs promptly. §707.5 provides a lactation program for expression, maintaining supply, weaning and delivery to an approved person. Exact family milk-pickup hours, packaging and storage limits are in a referenced procedure not recovered here; ask JHS for that plan before collection.

Grievances, sexual safety and outside complaints

For an immediate safety threat, tell a deputy or JHS and ask for a supervisor. For a routine custody problem, request the grievance form in your language. Policy §608 permits grievances about care, conditions, housing, release dates, discipline, programs, mail, phones and visits. Informal resolution is ordinarily attempted first, but not required for staff misconduct, unreasonable force or sexual assault/harassment. Submit to any Sheriff employee; serious misconduct may go directly to command, Internal Affairs or PLS. Keep a copy, date and the issue/response.

StepPolicy interval
Initial response5 days; 7 days for vendors
Appeal response5 days; 7 days for vendors
Disciplinary grievance1 day
Appeal by the personWithin 5 days of receiving the finding; two appeal levels, final Facility Commander
No responsePolicy says after 30 days administrative remedies are presumed exhausted; ask counsel about legal consequences in a specific case.

The policy does not provide a general initial filing deadline in the reviewed section; obtain the current form/instructions promptly. Clinical grievances are investigated by JHS with the Responsible Physician/designee as the clinical authority, and may be appealed.

PREA: sexual abuse and harassment

Family reporting: 415-734-3111, published on the current visiting page. A person in custody may tell any staff member, request the PREA Coordinator, submit a grievance/action request or speak to JHS/Behavioral Health. The PREA page says an independent confidential hotline is available inside; it does not publish its dialing code. Ask staff/PLS for access rather than borrowing another county’s code.

Sexual-abuse grievances may be submitted at any time, without informal resolution or submission to the accused staff member. Third parties may assist or file with the person’s agreement. Policy resolution is within 90 days, with a possible noticed extension up to 70 days. For imminent sexual-abuse danger, submit an emergency grievance to any supervisor: initial response within 48 hours, final decision within five calendar days. Immediate protection should not wait for those deadlines.

Outside misconduct complaints: send the Sheriff complaint form to sfso.complaints@sfgov.org, or contact the independent oversight intake at 415-241-7711, sfoig@sfgov.org, 1 South Van Ness Avenue, 8th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103, Monday–Friday 8 AM–5 PM. The current OSIG page says DPA continues investigating Sheriff complaints under an interim arrangement. An outside complaint is separate from the incarcerated person’s grievance and appeal deadlines.

Daily support, education and family connections

Ask the person to submit an Action Request to the facility for programs, religious support or reentry help. CJ2 lists SISTER substance-use recovery support, GLIDE services, health-insurance enrollment and a reentry living/learning pod. CJ3 lists COVER for veterans, College Pathways with City College/Five Keys, Keys to Change/College pods and LIFE for young adults. These are program descriptions, not guarantees of a seat, housing placement or release credit.

Policy §1005 provides education requests and self-study options, including consideration for people separated from general population. For access blocked by disability, language or housing, ask the program coordinator about an accommodation or alternative. Religious counseling and materials are coordinated through the Religious Services Coordinator; request an appropriate diet through the facility rather than sending food. Parent-child contact visits have their own application and parenting-class requirements, described in the children section.

Raise housing-safety and gender-identity concerns with classification and JHS. The current policy references a Voluntary Gender Identity Preference Form and requires attention to the person’s preferred name/pronouns and safety concerns. Ask classification for the current form and a review of disputed housing; §508.9.1 provides a Classification Review Board process for a gender-related placement disagreement, within 72 hours excluding weekends/holidays, and permits Human Rights Commission assistance. PLS can help with civil legal barriers, voting, housing preservation and family matters while criminal defense remains with counsel.

Court bond desk415-551-0691Court bond questions; jail release status remains with Sheriff.

Most criminal hearings are at the Hall of Justice, but some are at 400 McAllister Street or the Community Justice Center, 575 Polk Street. Use the court’s case index/calendar tools and the specific notice; do not assume every hearing is at the jail’s address. A case calendar is not a real-time custody locator. The current court page has an incomplete San Bruno telephone number; use 415-553-1430 instead of completing its digits by guess.

A Deputy Public Defender is assigned to the courtroom at the first appearance; the judge assesses financial qualification. The office asks people arrested or under investigation to contact it promptly, even before charges are filed. Provide identifying/case information so staff can find counsel. Discuss the facts of the case with counsel through an approved confidential route; ordinary family calls/video/mail are not attorney communications.

Bail and own-recognizance release are case-specific

The Sheriff’s current Buffin page says it stopped using the Superior Court’s preset felony/misdemeanor bail schedule for jail release on February 20, 2020. A judicial officer can set bail before, at or after arraignment. The court now links a July 1, 2026 bail schedule; its existence does not mean the Sheriff has resumed automatic schedule-based release. Look at Total Bond in the custody result and confirm the actual order, identity clearance and every hold with 415-553-1430.

  1. Ask counsel whether release on own recognizance (OR), bail or another order is being considered. OR is a written promise to appear, without a bail payment; the court can impose supervision or other conditions.
  2. The published accelerated pre-arraignment process describes a Pretrial Diversion PSA recommendation within eight hours of booking/identity confirmation, a judicial decision within 18 hours and a possible officer-requested 12-hour extension. Certain charges, history, warrants and holds exclude people. These are process rules, not a guaranteed pickup time.
  3. If bail is set, verify no other no-bail hold/warrant blocks release before paying. Full cash bail is directed to 850 Bryant Street, Room 460; call first about hours, acceptable tender and the current amount. A trust deposit is not posting bail.
  4. If choosing a commercial bond, read the premium, collateral and refund terms before signing. A fee paid to a bond company differs from cash deposited with the court; appearance compliance and court orders control disposition. Keep all receipts and confirm acceptance.

If pre-arraignment OR is denied or unavailable, counsel can address release at arraignment or seek appropriate review. No fee or caller’s promise should be treated as confirmation that the Sheriff has finished release processing.

Property authorization and release pickup

Booking property is inventoried and stored through the CJ1 property operation under policy §502. A person may request release of property or money to someone not in custody. Ask the housing deputy for the correct authorization and ask Intake/Release 415-558-4443 weekdays 8 AM–5 PM, or 415-553-1444 otherwise, to confirm that the signed request reached the property staff, who is named, required ID and pickup hours before travelling to 425 7th Street. A visitor reservation is not property-release authority.

The reviewed manual references a separate property procedure, but does not publish general outside pickup clock hours, all item exclusions or how long unclaimed belongings are retained. Do not transfer the one-year money-account deadline to every physical item. Evidence or property held by the arresting agency may require that agency’s release, not the jail’s authorization. Ask where a specific item was inventoried.

At release, the deputy returns personal property and obtains a receipt. Report missing/damaged items to a supervisor before leaving if possible and keep the inventory/receipt. The person should also check funds, ID, glasses, medication instructions and any court/supervision paperwork. Legal documents and vehicle-release forms can be signed with Watch Commander authorization without using a regular social visit under §1010.6.

Prepare for the actual release, including late night

Confirm the physical release destination with Intake/Release; the published pickup center is 425 7th Street, San Francisco, shared lobby with CJ2, not automatically the San Bruno housing gate. Policy §520 requires identity verification, valid release paperwork, warrant/detention checks, property return and consideration of medication/referral needs. Count, shift changes or another hold can affect processing. A judge’s order is not an exact exit time.

The policy provides at least three free calls to arrange a safe release. Agree on a reachable pickup contact, alternate transport, clothing, a charged phone and a place to stay. Ask about medication supply, appointments, supervision reporting and any referral before departure. Return of department equipment may require clinical coordination.

Voluntary later release and discharge desk

People cleared between 6 PM and 5 AM may choose a later departure by completing the voluntary late-release form. The published categories include completed sentence, OR, dismissed/dropped charges, acquittal, misdemeanor citation and bail. The person can remain up to 16 additional hours or until daytime business hours, whichever is shorter, and can revoke consent. This is their choice, not a family-imposed detention extension.

The Discharge Planning desk at 425 7th Street lobby publishes Monday–Friday 2 PM–10 PM, 415-553-9093, sfsd.dischargeplanning@sfgov.org. It provides planning, referrals, hygiene/clothing basics and charging. Published taxi vouchers are one-way within 25 miles of Intake/Release and valid 8 PM–5 AM; confirm availability and arrangements with the desk. Desk hours and voucher-use hours differ, and no weekend staffing is promised.

Reentry contacts and supervision follow-through

Ask for discharge planning while still housed, especially if housing, treatment or medication continuity will be difficult. The Sheriff describes coordination for people with substance-use, mental health or homelessness needs; it does not guarantee a treatment or shelter bed. Keep release orders and report to the probation/parole or program contact identified in them. Electronic monitoring and work alternatives require their own approval and conditions.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
